Our school has a strong enthusiasm for traditional music, and we are fortunate to have many students learning to play a variety of instruments, such as the tin whistle, flute, fiddle, guitar, mandolin, concertina, accordion, bodhrán, and ukulele.

Scoil Uí Riada’s school band, under the direction of Múinteoir Breandán is busy throughout the year, bringing the rich sounds of traditional Irish music to a variety of school activities and events. The band typically practices weekly, rehearsing together to build their skills and perfect their performance pieces. Throughout the year, they perform often so they may showcase their talents for the whole school to enjoy. They participate in special events, such as school festivals, concerts, and celebrations such as the Christmas concert and Grandparents Day.

During these events, the band plays a mix of traditional tunes, creating a lively and engaging atmosphere for students,
teachers, and visitors alike. In addition to school performances, the traditional band often takes part in music sessions with other local schools such as at our yearly ‘Battle of the Bands’. These sessions provide opportunities for students to interact with musicians from different schools and experience the joy of collaborative music-making. The band may also enter local competitions or festivals, where they can test their skills against other school bands.

Overall, the primary school traditional band plays a key role in fostering a love for Irish music, teamwork, and performance, enriching the school’s cultural life throughout the year.
